Growth Form: Herbaceous or somewhat woody climbers.

Stems: Stems often with aerial roots.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades oblong–lanceolate to ovate–lanceolate or ovate. Margins entire in juvenile plants, pinnatisect in adults. Long-petiolate; petiole with pulvinus at junction with leaf blade, somewhat sheathing at base. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in axillary inflorescences, peduncles short; spathe not constricted; spadix sessile, thick, cylindrical, shorter than spathe. Flowers unisexual, naked. Calyx absent. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens 4. Ovary superior, truncate, 1-celled or partially 2-celled; ovules 2(–8), basal on an intrusive placenta; stigma sessile, oblong-linear.

Fruit: Berries coherent; 1–8–seeded. Seeds reniform; usually striate.
